CHAPTER TWELVE

Matt awoke in fire screaming “no, no, no, NO!”

He lay on the floor of the RV, his hands tied in front of him and the smoke stinging his eyes. He took a breath and spasmed into a coughing fit. The carpet around his feet was on fire. He rolled hard to the left and right in the crowded space and beat the flames on his legs.

He heaved himself into a sitting position. Through the grey haze he could see that the fire was coming from the cushions on the wicker couch. Cinders and flaming debris swirled through the air and settled about him.

Coughing and gagging, he moved his legs over a flaming pillow on the floor and widened them as far as the rope would let him. Tears streamed down his face and he forced himself to bear the pain as the rope glowed then caught fire. To keep himself steady, he counted until he reached 25 when the rope finally snapped. He boosted himself to his knees. He spotted his axe amid the flames on the couch. Grabbing a nearby blanket, he threw it over the axe handle and gingerly pulled it toward him.

The smoke was growing thicker and blinding Matt. With his strength ebbing, he lurched toward the RV’s side door. He crashed into a lamp on a side table, felt for the wall, and pushed along it —

Then hands grabbed at him and cold air flooded his lungs. He lost his balance and felt himself being lifted. The tops of his boots scraped the ground. He was laid down gently until his face kissed the asphalt. The axe was taken out of his hand. Something was beating at his clothes and he could hear voices, “get the legs. Cover ‘em up. You think he’s alive?”

Matt felt cold and hot at the same time. He breathed the chill air, but without thinking. Just in and out, in and out, feeling nothing but the burning pain.
